Birdwatching Highlights
1. The Rufous Hornero (Furnarius rufus)
Spotted mid-tour, these iconic birds inspired a moment of reflection. Here is a beautiful poem by the Uruguayan poet Fernán Silva Valdés (1887–1975), simply titled "El Hornero," which beautifully portrays this bird as a humble, patient, and wise worker of the land.
El Hornero
By Fernán Silva Valdés
Little house of living mud in the fork of the branches; the architect is a bird with the manners of a countryman.
He doesn't sing so as not to waste the time he needs to knead in his beak the mud of his roof.
He works from sun to sun, while his wife helps him; he goes and comes bringing straw, he goes and comes bringing clay.
And when the nest is done, with its bedroom and its skill, he steps inside and only then does he let himself sing.
What a master of patience! What a worker of constancy! He teaches weak men how a home is earned.
2. Red-Crested Cardinal (Paroaria coronata)
A beautiful pair of these vibrant, red-crested birds was spotted along the path.
3. Shiny Cowbird (Molothrus bonariensis)
An adult male was observed alongside either a chick/juvenile or a female. They were captured in a classic, candid interaction scene: a fully grown juvenile still accompanying an adult, or perhaps a female sharing a feeding space in the middle of a puddle on the park's characteristic brick-dust (red dirt) path. It is incredibly common to see them walking (rather than hopping) on the ground in search of seeds and insects, utilizing the puddles to cool off and forage.
🔍 Found Objects along the Path
Every urban hike brings unexpected details. On this stroll, a tiny piece of lost urban jewelry caught the eye:
• The Object: A hoop-style earring or a fake/clip-on piercing.
• The Design: It features a double-ring design, simulating two parallel golden filaments—a very common style in modern urban costume jewelry (bijouterie).
• The Structure: The two ends do not close completely evenly; instead, it features a small mechanism or a cut with a stopper on one end, typical of standard nose rings or earrings.
• Scale: Extremely small.
