The Paradox of Volunteering: Between Service and the Need to Be Seen

A short while ago, I was browsing through an old website and stumbled upon something I had seen many times before without stopping to think about it: the sheer volume of "volunteer" requests to write articles for magazines. It reminded me of something similar in student group publications—those with a certain indoctrination slant or specific ideological lenses. But those student magazines don't go beyond that: they are decentralized, informal, non-institutional, and last only as long as a course duration or whatever printing or online publishing costs can be funded. The case I want to look at is different: minor institutions—foundations, NGOs, and the like—that position themselves under the rationale of "we are non-profit." But is that real? Or is there something else beneath the surface?
That is where I focus my attention: on those who are "volunteers." Because many people volunteer for others, working hard for an "insignificant" change—seemingly minor, asymmetrical—when they could be doing that exact same work for themselves. Writing for a magazine for free just for the honor and experience of having written there, when one could write for oneself and publish it per se, online or on paper. The magazine owner gets free articles, free advertising, and free private and public funding. Meanwhile, the volunteer writer takes home the experience of a lower-tier, non-equitable, bottom-line magazine, plus the pleasure of writing "for others" instead of writing for others while benefiting themselves, as in self-publishing.
There is something very interesting here: a portion of intellectual or cultural volunteering can be a deeply asymmetrical exchange framed as altruism, but where the benefits are unevenly distributed.

The Case of Magazines
My example of writing for free for a magazine is useful because it allows us to separate several things that are often conflated: writing, publishing, belonging, gaining recognition, and working for an institution.
A person might think: "I want to write, I want to be read, I want to publish, I want an editorial experience." But those desires do not necessarily obligate anyone to work for free for someone else's organization. One could write the exact same text and publish it on their own blog, on Substack, on a website, as a digital book, in a self-managed magazine, as a PDF, on social media, or even in a small print run. In that scenario, the work builds an asset that remains under the control of the person who created it.
And that is where the asymmetry emerges. The magazine simultaneously obtains: content, prestige, activity, publishing frequency, advertising, contributors, institutional legitimacy, and, eventually, grants or private donations. Meanwhile, the contributor receives, at best: "published in a magazine." This isn't always the case, of course, but in certain instances, the relationship can be extraordinarily unequal.

The Key Word is "Capitalization"
There is a huge difference between doing something for free and doing something for free that accumulates capital for someone else.
Consider two people who write for 100 hours. One publishes 20 articles on their own site. The other writes 20 articles for an institution. Both worked the exact same amount of time. But at the end of those 100 hours, the first person has:

•    20 original texts
•    An archive
•    An audience
•    Search engine positioning
•    An intellectual identity
•    Reusable material
•    A catalog
•    Analytics
•    Network contacts
•    The future possibility of monetization
The second person has:
•    20 published texts
•    An author credit
•    One line for their resume
•    The satisfaction of having participated
This doesn't mean the second person did something foolish. It means they are converting their labor into a type of capital they don't necessarily control. And that is far more interesting than simply stating "they work for free."

The Need to Belong
However, there is another, deeper sociological issue at play. Many people are not exclusively looking to produce: they are looking to be admitted. Saying "I wrote something" is not the same as saying "a magazine published me." The second phrase carries a component of recognition. The individual doesn't just want to create the work: they want an institution to certify that the work deserves to exist publicly.
And that brings out something quite curious: they can end up working for free just to get the stamp of approval from a structure that, objectively, holds very little significance. It is a form of: "I don't just need to make something; I need someone to tell me that what I made matters." And that is immensely powerful.

The Economy of Prestige
Some people agree to trade 50 or 100 hours of labor for something that is worth very little economically because they perceive they are gaining symbolic prestige.
Bourdieu would have analyzed this well: the cultural field does not run on money alone. There is also symbolic capital. A small magazine can say "we published X," and X might think "I got published in a magazine!", even if that magazine objectively has 400 readers. The psychological mechanism relies on the institution's name appearing to be worth more than its actual size. It is a kind of prestige inflation. An unknown publisher, a marginal magazine, a tiny festival, or a cultural association of thirty people can mentally transform into a major institution simply by using institutional language: director, editorial board, call for submissions, issue, dossier, contributors, selection, curation. The individual ends up granting the institution a value it might not actually possess.
Bourdieu breaks with the simplistic idea that the cultural field is governed solely by economic capital. His concept of symbolic capital is key because it introduces prestige, recognition, and legitimacy as forms of power circulating within that field. How it works:

•    Academic prestige: A writer or artist may have low commercial sales, but accumulate critical acclaim and intellectual legitimacy.
•    Social recognition: Peer applause, awards, mentions, and honors function as symbolic currency.
•    Cultural authority: Whoever manages to establish standards of taste or quality exercises power, even without substantial income.
•    Conversion of capital: Symbolic capital can be converted into economic capital (prestige that later generates sales) or political capital (authority that influences cultural policies).
An illustrative example: an obscure poet may live on meager resources, but if their work is recognized by critics and universities, they accumulate symbolic capital. That capital can open doors to grants, translations, or influence over future generations, even without immediate commercial success. In this sense, Bourdieu shows that the cultural field is an arena of struggles where different types of capital—economic, social, cultural, and symbolic—intersect and contend for hegemony.
Cultural volunteering and writing for free in magazines thus function as an unequal exchange, yet not an irrational one when viewed through Bourdieu's framework:
•    Symbolic capital: The writer receives no money, but gains recognition, legitimacy, and the ability to say "I published in such-and-such magazine." That prestige is a currency that circulates in the cultural field.
•    Cultural capital: The experience of writing for a publication, even a minor one, accumulates as practice, mastery of editorial codes, and credentials.
•    Social capital: Publishing in a magazine opens up networks of contacts, connections with other authors, editors, or readers.
•    Conversion of capital: Symbolic capital can later turn into economic capital: a writer with a history of unpaid publications can leverage that track record to secure grants, awards, or contracts.
The asymmetry of the exchange remains clear: the magazine owner gets free articles, advertising, and funding. The volunteer writer gets limited prestige, experience, and the satisfaction of "writing for others." Economic capital accumulates within the magazine, while the writer receives symbolic capital, which is more uncertain and less convertible.
There is also a psychological and social dimension that cannot be ignored: the psychology of belonging (writing for a magazine, even a small one, gives a sense of being part of a community and being recognized by an external "other"), the sociology of recognition (many people value prestige conferred by institutions more than self-publishing because they view it as more "legitimate"), and a matter of political philosophy regarding responsibility (cultural volunteering can be read as a way to sustain symbolic institutions, even weak ones, instead of committing to individual autonomy).
My critique, if I had to summarize it, is that this symbolic capital is fragile and, in many cases, "lower-tier or non-equitable": a lesser form of prestige that perpetuates the writer's dependence on editorial structures. The alternative—self-publishing online or in print—requires taking the risk of building one's own prestige without institutional mediation. Taking the risk, and that risk includes losing.

Helping Others, or Feeding the Machine
There is something even stranger in all of this. Sometimes the volunteer isn't actually helping "others." They are helping build an institutional machine that requires volunteers to function. That is an important distinction. "I am dedicating my time to help people" is not the same as "I am providing free professional labor to an organization that needs that labor to stay operational."
In the second scenario, a peculiar chain forms: volunteer → content → magazine → audience → legitimacy → funding → institutional continuity. And the volunteer sits at the very beginning of the chain, contributing the most costly resource: their time.

However, Not All Volunteering is Irrational
Here I offer an objection to my own point. There are situations where working for free for others can indeed be rational. For instance, when the institution provides something the individual cannot easily replicate on their own: access to a specialized community, actual readers, connections, training, infrastructure, distribution, professional editing, relevant accreditation, or downstream opportunities.
In that case, it wouldn't simply be "I work for free and they win." It could be "I contribute labor and they grant me access to something I cannot achieve alone." That is a genuine trade-off.
The problem arises when that supposed value is purely imaginary.

The Right Question
And there, I believe, lies the heart of the initial intuition. Perhaps the right question isn't "why do people work for free?", but rather "who accumulates the value produced by that labor?" That is a much more powerful question, because two activities can consume the exact same effort and produce vastly different outcomes.
Suppose I write a 2,000-word article. Option A, an external magazine: my work becomes part of the magazine's archive, reputation, and traffic. Option B, a self-owned project: my work becomes part of my own archive, reputation, and traffic. The fundamental difference isn't the effort spent. It is the ownership of what is accumulated.

From Self-Publishing to Autonomy
This connects to an idea I find particularly fertile. The word "self-publishing" can perhaps be expanded into a broader philosophy:
self-production → self-publishing → self-archiving → self-audience → autonomy.
Instead of dedicating every piece of work to fattening external entities, one can progressively build their own archive. An article today. Another tomorrow. A photograph. A route. A review. A poem. A collage. A piece of research. A video. A book. Over time, that stops being mere "content" and becomes personal intellectual property.
Here emerges a fundamental difference between two models of intellectual life. The institutional model asks, "Where can I publish?" The autonomous model asks, "What can I build?" The first question makes you dependent on doors opened by others. The second forces you to build the door. And perhaps that is why so many people choose the first: it is psychologically easier to ask for recognition than to build autonomy.
The paradox is beautiful: a person can spend years seeking approval from ten different institutions to certify that they are a writer, while another person spends those same years simply writing. In the end, one has a collection of symbolic certificates; the other has a body of work.

Bourdieu vs. Taleb: Symbolic Capital and Antifragility
Now I want to take this a step further and cross-reference it with Taleb, because that brings out a fascinating clash between symbolic capital and antifragility.
For Bourdieu, cultural volunteering—writing for free in small magazines—is explained as the accumulation of symbolic capital: prestige, legitimacy, belonging. Even if the economic exchange is unequal, the writer believes they are gaining recognition and credentials that can be converted into other forms of capital. The logic is structural: the cultural field operates under these rules, and whoever plays accepts the game.
Taleb would be far more skeptical. For him, publishing for free in a minor magazine is pure fragility: depending on a weak institution that might vanish or fail to withstand the test of time. Antifragility comes from self-publishing, exposing oneself directly to the market, to the reader, to real risk. That is where you find true skin in the game: the writer risks their own name without intermediaries. He would argue that the symbolic capital granted by minor magazines is noise, not signal. The signal is what survives time and randomness.
Contemporary skepticism—inspired by Taleb, but also by modern critical currents—tends to distrust weak cultural institutions that peddle cheap prestige. The solution it proposes isn't "don't write," but rather changing the locus of risk: publishing independently, building direct reputation, and accepting the volatility of the digital market. Does it provide a solution? Yes, but a hard one: abandoning the illusion of institutional symbolic prestige and betting on direct exposure, along with all the risks that entails.


In short: Bourdieu explains why people accept writing for free (symbolic capital), Taleb exposes that as fragility and noise, and the modern skeptical perspective offers a way out: self-publishing and direct risk.

An Imaginary Dialogue Between a Bourdieusian and a Talebian
I like to picture the two of them debating this face-to-face.

Bourdieusian: "The writer who publishes for free in a minor magazine isn't completely naive. They are accumulating symbolic capital: recognition, legitimacy, belonging. Even if the economic trade is unequal, the cultural field works by those rules. Prestige, even minimal, is a currency that circulates and can convert into other forms of capital."
Talebian: "That is fragility. Relying on weak institutions that offer cheap prestige is noise, not signal. The writer thinks they are gaining something, but in reality, they are mortgaging their time to a structure that could disappear tomorrow. The true test is direct exposure: self-publishing, putting your name on the line against chance and the market. That is having skin in the game."
Bourdieusian: "But symbolic capital isn't an illusion. Even a small magazine can confer a legitimacy that the market doesn't grant. The logic of the cultural field differs from economic logic: what seems minor can prove decisive in an author's trajectory."
Talebian: "Legitimacy without risk is hot air. If the writer risks nothing of their own, there is no antifragility. Self-publishing, though uncertain, builds a direct reputation. What survives time is signal; the rest is academic or institutional noise."
Modern Skeptic: "Both may have a point. Cultural volunteering explains why people agree to write for free: they seek recognition. But it is equally true that such prestige is fragile. The exit path is tough: abandon the illusion of cheap institutional prestige and bet on direct exposure, with all the risks it implies. We must acknowledge the tension and propose self-publishing as a strategy for autonomous reputation."

Chance and Probabilities
To conclude, I believe the relationship with chance and probabilities is central when combining both readings.
From Bourdieu's perspective, the writer doing cultural volunteering bets that the accumulated symbolic capital will hold value in the future. It is an implicit probabilistic wager: "If I publish here, maybe I'll be recognized later." Chance manifests in the trajectory of the cultural field: some magazines survive and legitimize, while others vanish, leaving the author with no return.
From Taleb's perspective, chance is brutal, and most minor cultural institutions are fragile. Publishing in them for free is like betting on a roulette wheel with low odds of survival. Antifragility emerges when the writer exposes themselves directly: self-publishing, real risk, direct contact with readers. There, chance may strike, but it can also yield unexpected, multiplying upside.
And the modern skeptical view recognizes that cheap institutional prestige is a low-probability gamble: most of those credentials do not survive over time. Self-publishing is a more volatile bet, but one with a positive asymmetry: if it fails, the cost is capped; if it succeeds, the upside can be massive. It is the same reasoning Taleb applies to "convex bets": risk little, with the potential to gain a lot.



In other words: publishing for free in minor magazines is a low-probability bet with an uncertain symbolic return. Self-publishing is a more volatile bet, but with a far better risk-reward profile.

La paradoja del voluntariado: entre el servicio y la necesidad de ser visto

Hace poco estaba revisando una web antigua y me crucé con algo que ya había visto muchas veces sin detenerme a pensarlo: la cantidad de pedidos en "voluntariado" para escribir notas en revistas. Me acordé de algo parecido en las revistas de grupos estudiantiles, esas con cierto carácter adoctrinador o con miradas puntuales. Pero esas revistas estudiantiles no pasan de ahí: son descentralizadas, informales, no institucionales, duran lo que dura una cursada o lo que se pueda financiar de impresión o publicación online. El caso que quiero mirar es otro: instituciones menores —fundaciones, ONG, y demás— que se paran bajo el criterio de "no perseguimos fines de lucro". ¿Pero es real eso? ¿O hay algo más debajo?
Ahí es donde pongo la mirada: en los que son "voluntarios". Porque mucha gente hace voluntariado para otros, trabaja duro por un cambio "menor" —en apariencia menor, asimétrico— cuando podría hacer exactamente eso mismo para sí mismo. Escribir en una revista gratis para tener el honor y la experiencia de haber escrito ahí, cuando se podría escribir para uno mismo y publicarlo per se, online o en papel. El dueño de la revista se lleva los artículos gratis, se hace publicidad gratis, consigue fondos privados y públicos gratis. Y el escritor voluntario se lleva la experiencia de una revista de menor nivel, no equitativa, de última línea, más el placer de escribir "para otros" en lugar de escribir para otros, pero con beneficio propio, como una autopublicación.
Hay algo muy interesante en esto: una parte del voluntariado intelectual o cultural puede ser un intercambio profundamente asimétrico que se presenta como altruismo, pero donde los beneficios están mal repartidos.

El caso de las revistas
Mi ejemplo de escribir gratis para una revista me sirve porque permite separar varias cosas que se suelen mezclar: escribir, publicar, pertenecer, ser reconocido y trabajar para una institución.
Una persona podría pensar: "Quiero escribir, quiero que me lean, quiero publicar, quiero tener una experiencia editorial". Pero esas cosas no obligan necesariamente a trabajar gratis para una organización ajena. Se podría escribir el mismo texto y publicarlo en un blog propio, en Substack, en una web, en un libro digital, en una revista autogestionada, en un PDF, en redes o incluso en una pequeña edición en papel. Ahí el trabajo construye un activo que queda bajo el control de quien lo hizo.
Y ahí aparece la asimetría. La revista puede obtener simultáneamente: contenido, prestigio, actividad, frecuencia de publicación, publicidad, colaboradores, legitimidad institucional y, eventualmente, subvenciones o aportes privados. Mientras tanto, el colaborador se lleva, en el mejor de los casos: "publicó en una revista". No siempre es así, por supuesto, pero en ciertos casos la relación puede ser extraordinariamente desigual.

La palabra clave es "capitalización"
Hay una diferencia enorme entre hacer algo gratis y hacer algo gratis que acumula capital para otro.
Pensemos en dos personas que escriben durante 100 horas. Una publica 20 artículos en su propio sitio. La otra escribe 20 artículos para una institución. Las dos trabajaron el mismo tiempo. Pero al final de esas 100 horas, la primera tiene:

•    20 textos propios
•    un archivo
•    una audiencia
•    posicionamiento en buscadores
•    una identidad intelectual
•    material reutilizable
•    un catálogo
•    estadísticas
•    contactos
•    la posibilidad futura de monetizar
La segunda tiene:
•    20 textos publicados
•    una mención de autor
•    una línea para el currículum
•    la satisfacción de haber participado
Esto no significa que la segunda persona haya hecho algo absurdo. Significa que está convirtiendo su trabajo en un tipo de capital que no necesariamente controla. Y eso es mucho más interesante que decir simplemente "trabaja gratis".

La necesidad de pertenecer
Pero hay otra cuestión, más profunda, de fondo sociológico. Muchas personas no buscan exclusivamente producir: buscan ser admitidas. No es lo mismo decir "escribí algo" que decir "una revista me publicó". La segunda frase contiene un componente de reconocimiento. El individuo no solo quiere producir la obra: quiere que una institución certifique que esa obra merece existir públicamente.
Y ahí aparece algo bastante curioso: puede terminar trabajando gratis para conseguir el sello de aprobación de una estructura que, objetivamente, tiene muy poca importancia. Es una especie de "no necesito solamente hacer algo; necesito que alguien me diga que lo que hice cuenta". Y eso es muy poderoso.

La economía del prestigio
Hay gente que acepta intercambiar 50 o 100 horas de trabajo por algo que económicamente vale muy poco, porque percibe que está obteniendo prestigio simbólico.
Bourdieu lo habría analizado bien: el campo cultural no funciona solo con dinero. Existe también el capital simbólico. Una revista pequeña puede decir "publicamos a X", y X puede pensar "¡publiqué en una revista!", aunque objetivamente esa revista tenga 400 lectores. El mecanismo psicológico consiste en que el nombre de la institución parece valer más que sus magnitudes reales. Es una especie de inflación del prestigio. Una editorial desconocida, una revista marginal, un festival diminuto, una asociación cultural de treinta personas puede convertirse mentalmente en una gran institución simplemente por usar el lenguaje institucional: director, comité editorial, convocatoria, número, dossier, colaboradores, selección, curaduría. El individuo termina otorgándole a la institución un valor que quizá no tiene.
Bourdieu rompe con la idea simplista de que el campo cultural se rige únicamente por el capital económico. Su noción de capital simbólico es clave porque introduce el prestigio, el reconocimiento y la legitimidad como formas de poder que circulan en ese campo. Cómo funciona:

•    Prestigio académico: un escritor o artista puede tener poca venta comercial, pero acumular reconocimiento crítico y legitimidad intelectual.
•    Reconocimiento social: el aplauso de pares, los premios, las menciones y las distinciones funcionan como moneda simbólica.
•    Autoridad cultural: quien logra imponer criterios de gusto o de calidad ejerce poder, aunque no tenga grandes ingresos.
•    Conversión de capitales: lo simbólico puede transformarse en económico (prestigio que después genera ventas) o en político (autoridad que influye en políticas culturales).
Un ejemplo ilustrativo: un poeta marginal puede vivir con recursos escasos, pero si su obra es reconocida por críticos y universidades, acumula capital simbólico. Ese capital puede abrirle puertas a becas, traducciones o influencia en generaciones futuras, incluso sin éxito comercial inmediato. En este sentido, Bourdieu muestra que el campo cultural es un espacio de luchas donde distintos tipos de capitaleconómico, social, cultural y simbólico— se cruzan y disputan la hegemonía.
El voluntariado cultural y la escritura gratuita en revistas funcionan, entonces, como un intercambio desigual, pero no irracional si lo miramos con las categorías de Bourdieu:
•    Capital simbólico: el escritor no recibe dinero, pero sí reconocimiento, legitimidad y la posibilidad de decir "publiqué en tal revista". Ese prestigio es una moneda que circula en el campo cultural.
•    Capital cultural: la experiencia de escribir en un medio, aunque sea menor, se acumula como práctica, como aprendizaje de códigos editoriales, como credencial.
•    Capital social: publicar en una revista abre redes de contactos, vínculos con otros autores, editores o lectores.
•    Conversión de capitales: lo simbólico puede transformarse en económico más adelante: un escritor con publicaciones gratuitas puede usar ese historial para conseguir becas, premios o contratos.
La asimetría del intercambio queda clara: el dueño de la revista obtiene artículos gratis, publicidad y fondos. El escritor voluntario obtiene prestigio limitado, experiencia y la satisfacción de "escribir para otros". El capital económico se concentra en la revista, mientras que el escritor recibe capital simbólico, que es más incierto y menos convertible.
Hay también una dimensión psicológica y social que no puedo dejar afuera: la psicología de la pertenencia (escribir para una revista, aunque sea pequeña, da la sensación de formar parte de una comunidad, de ser reconocido por un "otro" externo), la sociología del reconocimiento (muchas personas valoran más el prestigio otorgado por instituciones que la autopublicación, porque lo consideran más "legítimo") y una cuestión de filosofía política de la responsabilidad (el voluntariado cultural puede leerse como una forma de sostener instituciones simbólicas, aunque sean débiles, en vez de apostar por la autonomía individual).
Mi crítica, si tengo que resumirla, es que ese capital simbólico es frágil y, en muchos casos, de "menor nivel o no equitativo": un prestigio menor que perpetúa la dependencia del escritor respecto de estructuras editoriales. La alternativa —autopublicarse online o en papel— implica asumir el riesgo de construir prestigio propio, sin la mediación de una institución. Asumir el riesgo, y ese riesgo incluye el perder.

Ayudar a otros, o ayudar a la máquina
Hay algo todavía más extraño en todo esto. A veces el voluntario no está ayudando realmente a "otros". Está ayudando a construir una máquina institucional que necesita voluntarios para funcionar. Esa es una diferencia importante. No es lo mismo "estoy dedicando mi tiempo a ayudar a personas" que "estoy proporcionando gratuitamente trabajo profesional a una organización que necesita ese trabajo para seguir funcionando".
En el segundo caso hay una cadena bastante peculiar: voluntario → contenido → revista → audiencia → legitimidad → financiación → continuidad institucional. Y el voluntario queda situado al principio de la cadena, aportando el recurso más costoso: su tiempo.

Sin embargo, no todo voluntariado es irracional
Acá me pongo una objeción a mí mismo. Hay situaciones en las que trabajar gratis para otros sí puede ser racional. Por ejemplo, cuando la institución aporta algo que el individuo no puede reproducir fácilmente por sí mismo: acceso a una comunidad especializada, lectores reales, contactos, formación, infraestructura, distribución, edición profesional, acreditación relevante, oportunidades posteriores.
En ese caso no sería simplemente "yo trabajo gratis y ellos ganan". Podría ser "yo aporto trabajo y ellos me dan acceso a algo que no puedo conseguir solo". Eso es un intercambio. El problema aparece cuando ese supuesto valor es puramente imaginario.

La pregunta correcta
Y ahí, creo, está el corazón de la intuición inicial. Quizá la pregunta correcta no sea "¿por qué la gente trabaja gratis?", sino "¿quién acumula el valor producido por ese trabajo?". Esa es una pregunta mucho más poderosa, porque dos actividades pueden consumir exactamente el mismo esfuerzo y producir consecuencias completamente distintas.
Supongamos que escribo un artículo de 2.000 palabras. Opción A, revista ajena: mi trabajo pasa a formar parte del archivo, la reputación y el tráfico de la revista. Opción B, proyecto propio: mi trabajo pasa a formar parte de mi archivo, mi reputación y mi tráfico. La diferencia fundamental no es el esfuerzo. Es la propiedad de la acumulación.

De la autopublicación a la autonomía
Esto conecta con una idea que me parece especialmente fértil. La palabra "autopublicación" quizá pueda ampliarse a una filosofía más general: autoproducción → autopublicación → autoarchivo → autoaudiencia → autonomía.
En lugar de dedicar cada pieza de trabajo a engordar organismos ajenos, se puede construir progresivamente un archivo propio. Un artículo hoy. Otro mañana. Una fotografía. Una ruta. Una reseña. Un poema. Un collage. Una investigación. Un video. Un libro. Con el tiempo eso deja de ser simplemente "contenido" y se convierte en un patrimonio intelectual propio.
Ahí aparece una diferencia fundamental entre dos modelos de vida intelectual. El modelo institucional se pregunta "¿dónde puedo publicar?". El modelo autónomo se pregunta "¿qué puedo construir?". La primera pregunta te hace depender de puertas que otros abren. La segunda te obliga a construir la puerta.
