Twisted History of Literature

Twisted History of Literature - Javier Traité  I finished reading this book which I bought three days ago. A new branch of a bookstore I frequent recently opened, and my wife and I were there looking at the tables with books. After a moment, I wandered over to one of the tables, and in the back, on the bottom shelf, were the books related to the subject of literature itself.

There were several interesting ones, at least by title, and others not so much (at least for my interests). One in particular caught my eye: on its spine, the word TWISTED stood out in red, slightly slanted. That was why I initially passed over it; my first mental read was, “This is an unserious book, keep looking.” And so I did, continuing to look at books and read titles. Since I still hadn't decided, I made a second pass, and once again the book stood out with its title among the others: Twisted History of Literature. On this second pass, the book called out to me, sparked my curiosity, and I pulled it off the shelf. Immediately, two things clicked in my head: first, the colorful cover featuring well-known writers with their eyes covered; second, as I thumbed through it and let the pages fly by, I managed to read three or four familiar titles and authors. That was when I decided I was going to buy it. I did, and when I got home, I started reading it.

Its author is Javier Traité, a young Spaniard with a degree in history and a bookseller. He maintains a blog at http://literaturatorcida.blogia.com/. I remember that the previous book I read on the subject of the history of literature was also written by an author (A. Manguel) who was (or had been) a bookseller.
Upon finishing the roughly 300 pages, there are the author's acknowledgments, and at the very end—the first time I've ever seen this in a book—an acknowledgment from the publishing house itself, Principal de los Libros. In their acknowledgment, they naturally invite us to their website, which is http://www.principaldeloslibros.com/.

And now my opinion on the book. A necessary missing feature, at least for me, and one I wish it had included, was an index of authors and works—something common in books of this style—so that if you want to look up a particular one, you can get straight to the point without beating around the bush. Especially since I have a feeling I'll be returning to this book, perhaps once or more, to look for a specific commentary. It is one of those books that every now and then you go back to just to find a single point in question.

It tries to be comedic, and sometimes it succeeds (for example, I found it very funny when he branded Socrates a “dangerous unbeliever,” or when he tells the anecdote about Swift or the one about Goethe), but many other times it falls into repetitive vulgarity (although surely some will find this comedic as well).

When it refers to “Twisted Literature,” what exactly does it mean? We will never truly know; we have to form the idea ourselves. It doesn't state it clearly, or whatever little it does say lends itself to confusion. The Prologue begins with a definition from the RAE (Royal Spanish Academy), and then rambles for two pages before finally stating, “to offer a new vision of the history of literature [...] rather a review of the most sordid, twisted, deviant, and interesting aspects of the world of letters. The result is this book.”

Now then, the result was neither one thing nor the other; it was a total mixture, and something came out of it. If it was referring solely to works, that wasn't the outcome—it is true that it discusses many works, which is interesting. If it was referring to authors, it is true that it discusses the “twisted” lives or “twisted” (or eccentric) aspects of many authors, a sort of brief biography, something like micro-biographies, some based on the authors' own memoirs and others... and others? I suppose based on biographers, but the biographers are not included, not even in citations, despite the fact that biographers also made literature—true, minor literature without the transcendence of the authors in question. Ultimately, from the mix of works and authors' lives, the underlying question seems to be: did the lives they led influence the outcome of their works?

Now, regarding the “twisted” label—the guiding line meant to be followed throughout the work—it wasn't always adhered to. Often, with the exception of “because I cannot pass up,” he alludes to some work and/or life of an author who had nothing twisted about them. The risk of this is that in his selection, he left many out (of the “non-twisted” ones), and worse still, he may have left out minor authors who actually did have twisted works (and/or lives).

Of course, everything written here—this mix of essay with brief biographies and commentaries on works—is blended with humor: sometimes intelligent, and very often crude and boorish. I cannot lie; many times it made me burst out laughing, and there are truly parts that are very funny. I share the opinion he expresses over the course of three pages regarding child-rearing, having an open mind, children reading truths even if they were doubts, and the criticism of over-protection so that kids wake up and don't live in a dream. I agree with what he says there, but what is all of this? Is it a self-help chapter? Where is the “twisted” element in all of that? There isn't any. Regardless, the chapter on the Grimm brothers is well handled. The chapter I didn't like at all was Stevenson's; he devoted less than half a page to him, though at least he included him—I was worried I wouldn't find him.

What I really disliked—contrary to other stances he takes as a writer, because he is quite critical, especially of his own country, its history of colonization, current sectors of society, politics, etc.—is that he falls into aggressive vulgarity to disparagingly refer to authors based on the illnesses they suffered. Thus, he dispatches them as “the tuberculous one,” “the syphilitic one,” etc., which is completely out of place and tactless. Where is the humor in that? It feels like a mix of immature malice. Everything else is passable, but when he refers to people this way is when he veers off course.

Otherwise, the book is recommendable, well worth reading, and flows smoothly. It introduces you to many authors and works, tells stories, makes you familiar with texts, fills you with curiosity, and does it all with humor.

Exchange library

Walking down the street, on a sidewalk, hanging from a tree, there were two wooden crates of the kind commonly used in the fruit and vegetable sector. They were painted red and yellow, with strips of blue paper glued to them. Next to them, on the tree, three signs read "exchange library," "free library," and "leave a book, take another."

Right there, a kindergarten operates within the building. It is safe to assume this was an educational activity for the children. And I can imagine it was an activity integrated with the children's parents. I must clarify that these are merely assumptions born from simple, brief observation. But suffice it to say that the crates were placed at a height that a kindergarten child cannot reach, even on tiptoes and standing on the planter. Meanwhile, parents can easily reach them since both crates are at their height. Furthermore, the crates were not placed inside the kindergarten, but outside, right at the entrance where all the parents gather to drop off and pick up the children.

The system is simple: you leave a book and take another, creating an exchange circuit where, by simply contributing one book, you can read many different ones. Roughly speaking, it sounds fabulous. A recreational activity where everyone wins and intellectually enriches themselves in knowledge, always thinking of young children—presumably, these are books for kindergarten-aged kids, around three, four, or five years old.

Of course, for this system to work, a few other elements are needed: responsibility, solidarity, and the non-interruption of the circuit by those participating. It only takes one person not complying for the circuit to break. Or perhaps one person fails to comply, and out of imitation, the rest follow suit.

Unfortunately, these systems do not work—at least not in our society, and I would believe in the vast majority of them—and here, it did not work. My wife and I walked past one day and saw a single book placed there, waiting for the exchange; it was a book with a white spine, and there it was. Two days later we passed by again, and there were no longer any books, just a couple of magazines. They looked like those small, free delivery pamphlets advertising neighborhood service classifieds. Then, another visit later, there were two used books with adult themes, such as a world economy and finance novel. By a week later, the crates were completely empty, and in the meantime, rain had fallen and peeled off some of the colorful paper that decorated them. And so they remained for days. Empty.

The system did not work (at least in my view); selfishness, malice, disrespect, opportunism, harm—I don't know what it could be, a lot of conjectures come to mind, and all of them are bad. That individual who took the book (whether it was the one we saw or another that had been there) and left two free service advertisement magazines—why did they do it? There is a general principle that states "do not harm others." Did that person not think they were causing harm? Wasn't it better to leave nothing? Why did they take the book and not leave another? Did they really need it to read? After reading it, did they return it? Would they understand the difference between a book and a magazine? And that is assuming, in the best-case scenario, that they were an ignorant person, but even then, it doesn't add up; negative ideas assail me. Could they have been an opportunist? Did they take the book to keep it for themselves? Did they sell it? Did they give it away? Did they throw it away? Is it a manifestation of what is commonly called "cunning resourcefulness" (viveza criolla)? Could it have been a considerate attitude, thought out with a certain malice to cause harm and make the system fail? With current technologies, one might think the event was recorded by some dome or security camera nearby and that we could see who did it through the footage. But what good is that? We would only see an act and would not know the motivation. And even if we did find the author, and after a chat with them found the motivation (justified or not), what good would it do? None at all, because the "book exchange" system is already compromised; it has stopped working.

Many aspects come to mind here. These chain systems do not work; time is wasted, and other "members" or participants in the chain are affected. Chain letters are ancient and never worked; in theory, the analysis almost always turns out fantastic where everyone wins, but in practice, when individuals get involved, irresponsibility takes over, and the system is truncated and fails.

However, there are other similar systems that have a certain level of efficiency, though never complete. There are projects called "wandering library," "libertarian exchange library," etc., but they are never left entirely to the freedom of anonymous people to function; they have certain minimum rules of order or control.

In the aforementioned example, the two boxes were left without any control; anyone had access to them, no one was there observing or making sure that whoever takes a book leaves another, and this lack of control caused someone to abuse their freedom and cross into a lawlessness where selfishness and malice prevailed—over something as small as a book.

There was also the occasional error regarding inclement weather; the lack of a rain-protected place where people are asked to leave a book seriously affects how the system functions.

I am talking about all of this focusing on the physical realm and not the electronic and/or digital, since there the exchange issue (for example, P2P or other systems) works relatively well, whereas chain systems, hoaxes, fake news, and massive deceptions—where the organizer generally benefits while everyone else loses, though they usually go unnoticed for various reasons (minimal impact, ease of reproduction, etc.)—do not.

The positive aspect I see is the integration of parents. If it was designed that way—and that's what it seems to me—it can act as a motivator for parents to bring children closer to reading, and not just reading, but engaging in it by discussing the books or telling them the stories (in the case of storybooks) presented in the books. This is a flaw that occurs in many families, and I believe it has always been the case: just as there are parents who support their children's studies, there are others who are completely detached from it. It is one more motivation that helps children develop their imagination and fantasy. But although it seems simple, it is not entirely so; there are always reticent or "distracted" parents who don't care much, for whatever reason, and I believe that the vast majority of the time it is not an economic issue, but a cultural one.

The system implemented in the elementary school I attended was not far from this one, but it did have some variations. I don't remember the exact grade, but I think it was second or third grade: in an office that doubled as a "library," there was a table, and spread out on the table was a good and varied selection of children's storybooks. They would take the whole class and allow each student to take a book to read; after a week, it had to be returned. This was repeated twice a year. The second time, each student had to bring a book or booklet of their own to leave and contribute to the "library"; it could be new or used, and most brought a used one. But even with that system, there were always students who didn't bring any. It is understood that there was also a responsibility on the part of parents to cooperate with the child so they would bring the book—that is, the parent had to allow them to take the book, help and advise them for the best, and in many cases buy the book for them to take. And all of this, in many cases, did not happen.

There were also cases of students who took the book and, after a week passed, did not return it. Some forgot, and two or three days later the book was returned, but there were those few cases where the book or booklet never came back. In this system, the parents' responsibility was at home; there was no parent-school contact, unlike these crates on the kindergarten sidewalk, where although there is no direct parent-kindergarten contact, the bond is closer because it reaches the very door of the facility, and inevitably, many parents likely cross paths with each other when they pick up and/or drop off a book. And here I see that situations can arise where parents chat with other parents and with their children about books and reading, as well as the positive imitation of some parents seeing others exchange books, and finally, a sort of positive social control toward those parents who are more reticent to exchange a book with their children.

Gas explosion

Gas explosion on Av. Santa Fe. A calm, ordinary day just like any other. Mild. The usual noise, typical of the area's sound pollution, mostly caused by the incessant midday traffic. Quite a few people walking around, and several others at the bus stops going back and forth all the time. Against this backdrop, my wife and I were at the bus stop for lines 64 and 68, waiting patiently in line behind no more than four or five people. Chatting away and keeping an eye out for our transport, which wasn't arriving. Suddenly, an explosion—a loud, short noise. We felt something "touch" our legs. Immediately, we looked to see what was happening, where that "blow" came from. It sounded like a hit, a crash; the uncertainty made it impossible for us to determine what it was. The same thing happened to everyone else around. No more than three seconds passed before all eyes were focused on the exact same spot. The scene of the incident had been spotted. Right there, less than five meters away, a small but steady flame emerging from the ground, from the sidewalk; a small canister—possibly one of those 3 kg bottled gas tanks—rolling around on the pavement; and a person throwing themselves backward, then coming back and trying to get closer to see what was happening and how to control it. And what was happening was no minor problem: gas was leaking, and there was fire.

Fear took hold of the people around—not all of them, as many seemed surprised, drawn by curiosity. In our case, the fear of something worse made us react by getting away from the area as quickly as possible. No one was injured at first glance, no one hurt, and there was a burning gas leak that kept growing in size. Why stay? Letting the professionals handle it seemed like the most sensible thing to do, and we felt that the best option as mere civilian spectators was to move away from the spot. However, some people formed a circle around the small incident. But it kept growing. We moved away from the spot quickly, at the same time as other people did. A young couple who had been at the same bus stop as us was beating us in the escape, and as we walked toward the next stop, we looked back and could see the flames getting bigger and higher. Two blocks ahead, the bus was just coming by, so we flagged it down. First the couple who had left before us got on, and then the two of us, to finally get away from the area and reach our destination, left wondering what had happened and with the relief that it hadn't turned into a much worse tragedy.

A few hours of the day passed. When we were returning along the same route, from a distance the first thing we saw was a fire truck—its characteristic red stood out very well—and then the full picture: quite a few police officers around the area, two or three patrol cars, an ambulance, two media vans (at least the ones that could be seen), barrier tape, and traffic redirected toward one of the lanes furthest from the site. Later on, the news had already reached some media outlets. Luckily, there were no fatalities. Two people were transported with minor injuries. The fire grew and reached the entire front of the store. As a precaution, the building and the two adjacent places were evacuated, until the incident was finally brought under control. The news of this event can be seen at the following link: http://www.infobae.com/2015/08/20/1749633-explosion-e-incendio-un-comercio-frente-plaza-italia

200 Letters

While browsing a web forum, I stumbled upon the existence of this film. I decided to watch it. I had never seen any movie from Puerto Rico, so I started with this one.

Titled 200 Letters, released in 2013, and directed by Bruno Irizarry.

It is classified as a romantic comedy.

Overall, it is a passable film.

In short, a young man working in New York accidentally ends up with a charm belonging to a young woman, knowing only that she lives in Puerto Rico. He and his friend travel there to find her and return the charm. Upon arrival, they discover that the name of the girl they are looking for (María Sánchez) is extremely common and there are many of them. Someone suggests that they could send a general letter to all of them hoping to get a reply from the woman they are seeking, but they receive several responses and begin tracking her down (a road movie). The story is intertwined with two other women who accompany them on their search.

It is an idea that could have been fully exploited, but it left me with the feeling that it had potential for more than what was done. Perhaps it is not the kind of humor I like; a bit slow for my taste. Furthermore, many scenes felt like they were forcing humor that did not come out naturally, nor did it seem to. On many occasions, they fall into clichés.

However, there are some aspects of this film worth rescuing. One is the landscape. It certainly doesn't go unnoticed, from the city to the countryside, at least to appreciate the context in which they moved. That background provided an extra touch, a sense of purpose for the characters.

In terms of comedy, without a doubt, the best performance goes to a Mexican actor who precisely played the role of a Mexican, an actor named Jaime Camil (Juan in the movie). Perhaps the funniest moments of the film were delivered by him, although it often felt like he wasn't being matched by the others.

Among the female actresses, the one who does the best job—playing a somewhat rambling pacifist for whom everything is fine and positive—is actress Mónica Steuer, who plays Rebeca in the film. I just can't get used to this somewhat slow humor; I felt like something more was missing.

Another aspect of the film worth salvaging is the vocabulary, the Spanish language, featuring on one hand Mexican-Spanish and on the other Puerto Rican-Spanish, as well as English. Because, at least in the version I had the opportunity to watch, the beginning of the film is spoken in English and partially subtitled. For anyone who doesn't understand it, it might feel a bit tedious, but only for a stretch.

At times, I don't think the relationship between New York and Puerto Rico was coincidental, considering the historical ties between the US and Puerto Rico, and the same goes for the language—that mix of English and Spanish in the film. If we look closer at the movie, we will find passages that only Puerto Ricans can fully understand, certain phrases that allude to their own idiosyncrasies.

The final aspect to consider deals with how the film was made: an intercalation between reality and fiction. One of the actors, the main character around whom the entire story revolves, is Lin-Manuel Miranda (Raúl in the movie), who plays a young man who draws comic strips as a hobby and later sells them. However, he reaches a point of obsession where he confuses reality with his comic book characters, so we see a movie where the reality of the present merges with animated drawings, always from the perspective of this character, who suffers from this kind of delusion the whole time. This is nothing more than a faithful reflection of many disturbed individuals who walk the city day by day and cannot discern one from the other. Every now and then, we see in the media when one of these subjects, somewhere in the world, gives in to their madness, snaps, and commits a tragedy. Although they are the minority, there are many people who live in a different reality. At times, it feels like the odyssey of a little crazy man obsessed with a girl after a verbal exchange of no more than five minutes, crossing certain boundaries in search of his "love"—such as traveling from one country to another—fueled by a mental fabulation. This individual had created his comic book character named Iro, which means 'man' in the Taíno language, an indigenous language of the Arawak linguistic family spoken in the Antilles around the time of the Spanish Conquest and currently extinct. This is how the story wraps up, blending reality and fiction, giving it a context that, if it were pure reality, would place us in the presence of a dangerous misogynist—and indeed, on a couple of occasions, the film flirts with a slightly misogynistic tone, though it erases it with the final punchline. The psychological representation of this character turns out to be interesting; I didn't find him charismatic as a comedic actor, but he does a great job portraying a subject completely mentally alienated by the comic book, merging two realities into one and walking through life passing as an ordinary, everyday person—simply terrifying!

Ultimately, this reality-fiction aspect is worth considering.

Some curiosities presented by the film: The story is reportedly based on a similar event that happened to the director. Another is the mirror game, the female counterparts to the male characters where we see Dayanara Torres (Yolanda in the movie) and Mónica Steuer. Both play as mirrors to Juan (Mexican) and Raúl (Puerto Rican), since Rebeca is Mexican and Yolanda is Puerto Rican. Now, if this game of doubles is noticeable in the film, well, I didn't realize it, I didn't notice it, or I didn't pay proper attention, or perhaps it wasn't fully achieved (or maybe I just didn't know how to appreciate it). The truth is that it was there in the film.

We are not dealing with a great work of cinema—at least I don't know what Puerto Rican cinema is like in general, I am unfamiliar with it, this being my first approach—especially since, looking at some news online, they praise it way too much, at least for my taste:

The idea is good, it turns out interesting, but it left me with the feeling that it could have been so much more, with a lot more dynamism.

200 Cartas.

http://www.listindiario.com/entretenimiento/2013/9/27/293774/200-cartas-bien-hecha

The Danube Pilot

The Danube Pilot - Jules Verne. (November 12, 2014). Enthusiastic about some titles from the well-known Robin Hood collection, some of which I have already read—such as The Trepang Fishermen (from a similar collection) or Eagles of the Steppes, both by Emilio Salgari—I acquired one of them at a used bookstore for only 30 pesos. It is in good condition and even still has its dust jacket protector. The book is titled The Danube Pilot, written by the French novelist Jules Verne.

Several motivations drew my interest to this novel. The main one was that it represented an approach by Jules Verne to the detective/police fiction genre, but also the fact that the story takes place along a very well-known European river, the idea that it was rewritten by his son Michel Verne, and even the artwork featured on the cover of the edition I acquired (which I had already seen before).

The book was published posthumously in 1908. As indicated on this webpage: http://jgverne.cmact.com/Bibliografia/OApocrifas.htm, the story was rewritten by Michel Verne based on the novel "Le beau Danube jaune" ("The Beautiful Yellow Danube"), written by Jules Verne.

The edition I have is a first edition from 1958, published by ACME, S.A.C.I., with a cover illustration by artist Pablo A. Pereyra (I must say that very rarely—or rather, I'd say this is the first time I've seen an illustrated cover that also includes the author's name right on the book cover). Translation and adaptation by Alfredo Julio Grassi, and illustrations by José Clemen. The original title is Le Pilote Du Danube.

I had doubts about whether this was an unabridged edition or an abridged one, especially since the translator is credited as doing an "adaptation." However, I believe it refers to a translation adaptation regarding the language rather than a cut of the original edition. Later, I was able to check the original version on the web, and it has roughly the same page count as this version, so I trust that it is an unabridged version even though the book itself doesn't explicitly state it.

The novel recounts the events that accompanied a Danube River pilot during his navigation career along the river to break a record for permanence and fishing. In the middle of all this is the plot involving a police investigator tasked with taking down a gang of pirates who prey on the villages along the shores.

The book's front flap states: "In the course of the journey, they experience the most extraordinary adventures that will satisfy the most demanding reader from the very beginning of the novel to its surprising and well-crafted resolution."

And it does not disappoint in this regard; the novel is brief but packed with many adventures. It is simple, straightforward, very easy to read, well-written, captivating, and never boring.

There is a short excerpt about this particular novel within a longer article titled "The Authenticity of Verne's Last Novels" by Ariel Perez, which I found interesting and wanted to transcribe. The webpage where this article is published is http://jgverne.cmact.com/Articulos/Autenticidad.htm:

The Danube Pilot "The date of 1880, attributed by some to the creation of the original novel which Jules titled The Beautiful Yellow Danube, stems from Hetzel’s justification for changing the title, arguing that the date serves as a reminiscence of the famous waltz 'The Blue Danube' by Strauss, which was all the rage at that time. But scholars of Verne's work maintain that the manuscript dates from many years later, judging by its handwriting, which is very similar to that of novels like The Golden Volcano and In Magallanes. Conversely, the handwriting of a novel from the 1880s is completely different, with smaller, closed, and rounder letters. Specialists place the writing of the work around 1895.

The sources for writing this novel are found in the magazine Le Tour du Monde. In it, the historian and statesman Victor Duruy recounts in issues 61 and 62 his 1860 journey from Paris to Bucharest. All the touristic descriptions in Jules's novel stem from Duruy’s travel account, which the writer adapts in his own way.

The original manuscript had only sixteen chapters in its initial version. Michel added three and introduced a secondary character, the bandit Jackel Semo, who did not exist in the original manuscript. The idea for creating this character came from real life; he was someone Michel had previously known in Belgrade. Feeling alluded to and disliking how he was portrayed in the novel, he sued Michel. Hetzel quickly corrected this and replaced Jackel Semo with Yacoub Ogul.

With these changes, the novel shifts from a light, ironic tale to a detective story in Michel’s version, who considerably amplifies the initial police plot of the work at the expense of the touristic descriptions, the fishing feats, and the gastronomic fantasies of the two companions, Krusch and Jaeger. In The Danube Pilot, the simple gang conceived by Verne becomes a much more aggressive band. The two works have only one point in common: the beginning and the setting where the action unfolds. Michel adds characters and fills the work with intrigue and suspicion."

This excerpt is enlightening because, at the end of the novel, there is an Epilogue where the author states that these were true events. I wondered if they really were; I didn't think so, as I couldn't imagine so many adventures—some of them not very believable. But reading this excerpt, I do believe it could have been based on real events. My impression is that he gathered several separate events, as the study indicates, and then put them all together with a novelistic touch to build the work.

The edition I read has illustrations. They are not the original ones, but it is true that the original version also contained illustrations. What it lacks is a map. It would have been interesting to include a map—or two, if you will: one referencing the historical period in which the work takes place, and another representing the present day when the book was published. The river hasn't changed, but the geography of the countries or nations has, and quite a bit. Still, an orientation map wouldn't have hurt, because for someone who doesn't know the area or isn't looking it up, locating oneself can be a bit confusing.

Regarding this book and story, a movie was made: a 1974 Hungarian film titled The Danube Pilot, whose original title is A Dunai hajós, directed by Markos Miklós. IMDB link: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0071447/

Unfortunately, I haven't had the opportunity to see it; I can't find it in Spanish or even with subtitles.

This novel is often categorized (mostly by booksellers) as juvenile literature. That's true—a young reader might find it interesting and easy to understand. But in my view, this novel goes beyond that. If one reads it carefully, beneath the police plot (so to speak) or the characters' adventures, one finds much more. There are issues that adults cannot miss, ranging from the geographical to the political.

As for geography, the author mentions, lists, and describes rivers, streams, tributaries, hills, and mountains. He doesn't skip brief descriptions—not that they are magnificent descriptions, mind you, but brief sketches of certain cities and ports. This allows us to transport ourselves back to that historical moment and understand what life was like in those times.

But the most important aspect is the historical situation: a Bulgaria under the Ottoman Empire, specifically in the final stages of that domination, and the moments leading up to a Russo-Ottoman War that would eventually lead to a Russian victory over the Turks. Let us consider the coexistence of the peoples in the Balkan nations; it even prompts us to reflect on what we know today and the conflicts that unfolded in contemporary times in that region.

Now, some other personal comments about things that caught my attention: for instance, he mentions an alcoholic beverage without explicitly explaining it, only referring to it by name—rakı. I wondered, "What is rakı?" The answer is that it is a famous anise-flavored liqueur in Turkey. It is similar to several alcoholic beverages found in the Mediterranean and Balkan regions, such as pastis, sambuca, arak, ouzo, tsikoudia, tsipouro, and mastika. Made from various fruits, grapes and raisins are generally used in its production. In Turkey, this drink is considered the national liqueur and is generally served mixed with an equal part of water. http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rak%C4%B1

Another point is the inspector—an inspector chosen from among the representatives of various governments. Of course, this is novelistic, but when we think of Interpol today, putting things into perspective, the figure of the inspector could well be likened to what Interpol is today. In the novel, the institution is referred to as the "Danube Secret Police."

The so-called Danube League, another creation of the author, would be a kind of fishing club whose associated members spanned several countries—that is, all the countries through which the Danube flowed. It is hard to imagine, but when we think about it today, it resembles the creation of national blocs, or even more so, the various internet groups formed with members from all over the globe. The author envisioned it, but restricted it to a group of fishermen sharing a common river.

Something else that caught my attention is the portrayal of women. I had read about this in two other books—one a period book from the 19th century and the other a modern novel set in those years—and in both, a portrait of a woman (or of children, parents, or relatives) appears. Apparently, it was quite common. Today it might seem strange—or maybe not strange, but certainly something forgotten for obvious reasons—but back then, it was common to carry and/or travel with painted or drawn portraits of loved ones.

Whoever wants to spend some time with a brief, very good adventure story should read this novel.

On certain media programs related to books

Continuing what was started on this topic in this same blog, in a post titled “On some television programs related to books” (whose direct link is http://reuniendoletras.blogspot.com.ar/2014/09/sobre-algunos-programas-de-television.html), where I briefly discussed three cases: Ver para Leer (Telefe), Materia Prima (Canal a), and Obras Maestras Inconclusas (Encuentro. Foreign production).

Now I am going to discuss other cases in this new entry called “On some media programs related to books”.

The first of these is a television show called Libroteca, which airs on the Canal de la Ciudad (Ciudad Abierta), the public channel of the City of Buenos Aires. Here is the link to its website: http://www.buenosaires.gob.ar/canal-de-la-ciudad/libroteca-con-eugenia-zicavo. The host is Eugenia Zicavo, a young host, columnist, sociologist, and professor who has a Twitter account linked at https://twitter.com/eugeniazicavo, where she usually posts links to the episodes of her show and brief comments related to them, among other things. The host first approached television and books when she co-hosted a segment on a show by journalist Gerardo Rozin back in 2010 called Esta noche, libros (which, by the way, is another show you can enjoy on YouTube).

In each episode, the host interviews a well-known writer, and the most interesting part is when she visits the guest’s home, where they show her their personal library. During the chat, the guest presents their books and shares brief comments on situations that arise in conversation. What is interesting is seeing a diverse array of people from different professions and reading tastes pass through—some who are interesting, others who might initially generate a prejudice, but when you see them as readers, you are surprised. There is always something to take away and learn from each of them. The show is engaging and dynamic. Other segments then follow, such as the children's segment, where the guest is precisely a child who talks about their reading, or the illustrators' segment. Many of the episodes of this show can be watched on YouTube at the following link: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLLCEZP5bI-uQBBVei3Xue3lS8EdrL8U8m

Another of the programs, this time on the video site YouTube, is a radio show from the town of Esquel. A person who goes by the name Calaverita Mateos (whose website is http://calaveralma.com.ar/) has a radio show called Choike Urbano Lra9 Esquel, and apparently uploads each of the show's segments to YouTube. One of the guest columnists who frequently participates in the show is Daniela Della Bruna, a literature professor with three published poetry books (Suburbio (2011), El desplazamiento (2013), Tarde de Viento (2013)). On the radio show, she is in charge of the literature segment. She does it in an entertaining and very good way: she raises a topic and develops it, which is more focused and therefore more enriching than other shows in the literary style. Furthermore, in the middle of her presentation, she allows herself to laugh at some jokes or fun points of view. Each of her talks (which may focus on writers or a particular topic within literature) is clear, concise, and manages to convey the idea she intends to share to the listener. She has a blog linked at http://noctambulalecturasyescrituras.blogspot.com.ar/, and her radio columns can be watched on YouTube at the following link: https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=daniela+della+bruna

Next is a webpage called Educatina, which has a Literature section linked at http://www.educatina.com/literatura. Here we can find quite a few videos, all of them theoretical and covering generalities on the subject—in this case, literature. However, the website itself contains many videos on various other subjects such as Art, History, Mathematics, Biology, and many more. It is worth taking a look around and browsing the area that interests you. Additionally, this particular website includes an exercise section in each area, allowing you to test your knowledge with numerous available exercises. At times, although instructional, the videos are a bit slow, making it easy to lose concentration.

Finally, I will add one more, this time a micro-program series called El Señalador - Libros y cultura, which has also been uploaded to YouTube. It also deals with literature and was broadcast by Canal 7 de Neuquén during 2009. It is a production by El Abrelatas, whose website is no longer online, but it does have a Google profile at the following link: https://plus.google.com/116224513904406109286/videos, and the videos can be watched on YouTube at https://www.youtube.com/user/ElAbrelatasNqn/videos. It is quite focused on the topics it develops; I haven't watched all of its episodes thoroughly enough yet to comment further. They are micro-programs since they do not last longer than 3 minutes, making it impossible to get distracted. The ones I have watched are a joy to enjoy. The show is hosted by journalist Norberto Masso. This group of literary micro-stories has a blog whose website is http://elsenialadornqn.blogspot.com.ar/
