Urban Walk through Palermo: The Return After the Independence 9K

Finishing a race always leaves that classic mix of good fatigue, adrenaline, and satisfaction. This time it was the turn of the Independence 9K Race, and the route didn't end at the finish line: it continued with a true urban trek through the heart of Palermo.
Upon crossing the finish line, receiving the medal, and going through the hydration station, they were handing out plastic flags. Although they aren't quite the same as aluminized thermal blankets, these plastic ponchos do a great job of temporarily retaining body heat. When you stop running suddenly, your body halts its active heat production, and accumulated sweat cools down quickly in the wind. The plastic acts as a good protective barrier against that sudden drop in temperature.
With our bodies now cooled down, we walked around the event grounds. While many runners were still completing the course, a folklore band was accompanying the event with live music on the main stage.
It was right at that moment when a race classic made its appearance: a rhythmic "click" with every step. A pebble had wedged itself into the sole of my shoe—something that has almost become a habit on these outings.
To wrap up the day, the journey back was entirely on foot. Walking at a gentle pace is a great way to help the body start recovering progressively after an intense effort. The return route skirted along Figueroa Alcorta Ave., detour through Sarmiento Ave., all the way to Plaza Italia.
By the end of the day, the numbers reflected a great day of movement: 17,536 total steps and almost 17 km combining the race and the urban walk. An excellent way to exercise, do some urban hiking, and enjoy the city.
