Night Walk Through Palermo: Argentina 2 - 1 England (2026 World Cup)

Route: Urban walk (urban hiking / LISS) starting and ending at Plaza Italia, CABA.

Style: An active yet contemplative journey in the midst of street celebrations.

The match ended at 6:00 PM, and just a few minutes later, we headed out. Argentina had just defeated England 2–1 in the 2026 World Cup semifinals. True to tradition, people immediately took to the streets to celebrate.

Unlike the previous match, the crowd in the streets was significantly larger. Once again, it was one of those games that seemed lost until the national team turned it around near the very end. An intense emotional force filled the air, with the memory of the Falklands (Malvinas) War always present—beating the English on the pitch added a much deeper layer of meaning to the victory.

We took Santa Fe Avenue, echoing scenes from the 2022 World Cup (though not quite reaching the level of that unforgettable final). The crowd moved steadily towards the Obelisco:

•    Santa Fe Ave. & Scalabrini Ortiz Ave.: A large group of fans was cheering frantically; we had to walk single file through the crowd to get across.
•    Alto Palermo Shopping Mall Area: Two buses packed with passengers and a couple of cars were completely trapped, facing a long wait.
•    Santa Fe Ave. & Coronel Díaz Ave.: Traffic was completely blocked. The crowd was even larger here, extending half a block down Coronel Díaz, where speakers had been set up blaring music. Crossing there was impossible, so we took a one-block detour to rejoin Santa Fe Avenue further ahead.

We pushed forward almost to the intersection with Pueyrredón Avenue—stopping half a block short because the street was packed solid. There, people were kicking a couple of soccer balls up into the air. At one point, one of the balls landed on a building ledge, and a fan climbed up without hesitation to retrieve it so the game could continue.

By then, an hour and a half of nonstop chanting, cheering, and shouting had passed.
We decided to head back. Upon reaching Coronel Díaz Avenue again, the crowd was so massive that we had to detour once more, turning a block early to rejoin three blocks later. However, with the mall located there, the flow of people remained huge. Along that stretch, we spotted two parked cars with sound systems set up in their trunks, bringing music to the street.

To close out this celebration route, before returning to Plaza Italia, we paused on the sidewalk to photograph the light display from the immersive art exhibition taking place at the Botanical Garden.
