Palermo Walk: World Cup Fever After Argentina vs. England

There are days when the city isn't walked: it is navigated through collective emotion. This urban trek through the neighborhood of Palermo took place on an unforgettable afternoon in 2026: Argentina's 2–1 victory over England. As soon as the referee blew the final whistle around 6:00 PM, we took to the streets from Plaza Italia to witness and record the outburst of public excitement.

This football match carried the weight of its history, triggering a celebration that was noticeably larger, more effusive, and more emotional than in previous rounds.
The Route: Landmarks and Street Pulse

•    Santa Fe Avenue Axis: Palermo's main artery turned into a human river heading toward the Obelisco. The density of the crowd shifted constantly, dictating the pace and speed of movement.
•    Scalabrini Ortiz Junction: One of the first bottlenecks along the route. The crowd at the corner was so dense that the only way to move forward was single file through the throng.
•    Alto Palermo Zone: Outside the shopping mall, the mass of people brought vehicular traffic to a complete standstill, leaving buses and private cars immobilized amidst the celebration.
•    Coronel Díaz Junction: The party turned loud. Massive speakers installed right in the middle of the street completely blocked the intersection. To keep moving, we made a tactical detour through side streets, rejoining Santa Fe one block down.
•    End of the Route (Santa Fe Ave. & Pueyrredón Ave.): The peak concentration point. Amid chants and balls flying through the air, the scene of the day belonged to an improvised group that climbed a building facade to retrieve a ball stuck on a ledge.
•    Return Leg: After an hour and a half immersed in the celebration, we began our way back. Since the crowd at Coronel Díaz was still growing, we widened our detour three blocks down to rejoin near Alto Palermo, where people were celebrating around parked cars with open trunks blasting music.
•    Ending at the Botanical Garden: Near our final destination at Plaza Italia, we wrapped up the trek by photographing the light show and projections of an immersive art exhibition inside the garden premises from the sidewalk—a perfect visual counterpoint to the festive chaos of the avenue.
