Returning from the Fiestas Mayas Race: The Power of an Active Recovery Walk

After a quick stroll around the venue, we headed back. We opted for a slow, nearly 6 km walk to cool down and achieve an active recovery.
This is an excellent transition strategy between intense effort and returning to a state of calm. This specific pace and duration are ideal for a recovery walk: long enough to promote lactic acid clearance and muscle reoxygenation, but without putting further cardiovascular demands on the body.

Physiological Effects

•    Active Recovery: Walking at a low intensity maintains circulation without generating additional fatigue.
•    Thermoregulation: The cool temperature (12°C) helps stabilize body temperature after exertion.
•    Joint Mobility: The steady pace and flat terrain help release tension in the hips and knees.
•    Oxygenation & Heart Rate: The average speed keeps you in a low aerobic zone, which is ideal for normalizing heart rate.
Conclusion
This walk perfectly fulfilled its post-competition cooldown function by:
1.    Promoting muscular and cardiovascular recovery.
2.    Helping prevent stiffness and micro-injuries.
3.    Allowing for a mental disconnect after the demands of the 10K race.
A Scenic Detour on Figueroa Alcorta & Sarmiento

Time flew by! Right as we started walking, the clock struck 10:00 AM—the official start time for the 3K race. Because of that, the race caught us halfway through our route, so we stopped to watch the runners pass. There was a great crowd standing along the sidewalk cheering them on, and the turnout for the 3K was absolutely massive.
