Heading to the Unión Europea BsAs Run: A Cold Autumn Morning in Palermo

Walking, on my way to the Unión Europea BsAs Run, Palermo, CABA.

Walking, on my way to the race.

The day was cold—I’d even say it’s been the coldest race of the year so far. The thermometer read 8°C (46°F), but with the wind chill, it felt more like 6°C (43°F). I was torn between wearing running tights or shorts. In the end, I went with shorts, a thermal shirt with a mock neck zipper—which was perfect because I could unzip it once I warmed up and skip the neck gaiter—and my usual beanie, which is thin, snug, and goes everywhere with me.

To avoid freezing while walking, the strategy was to jog there gently. This served a triple purpose: warming up, beating the cold, and getting there faster. We were running a bit tight on time; the race was set to start at 8:00 AM, and we only headed out toward the meeting point at 7:25 AM.
In less than 15 minutes, we were in the area.

From Plaza Italia, along Santa Fe Ave. all the way to Del Libertador Ave., the streets were completely deserted. We took a shortcut through Iraola Ave., where only a handful of early birds were already training around the Rosedal circuit.

Finally, we reached Presidente Figueroa Alcorta Ave., which was already closed to traffic. That's where the atmosphere shifted—you could see runners everywhere: some just arriving, others warming up, and some pinning on their race bibs.

The sky was putting on a show, displaying dramatic clouds with intense shades of orange, pink, and gold, contrasting beautifully with the grayish blue of a dawn that hadn't fully awakened yet. The streetlights along the avenue were still glowing. It was a deeply peaceful, beautiful setting, filled with that magical, crisp light that only autumn can bring.
