Movie: "Dumb and Dumber" (1994)
Directed by Peter Farrelly.
This movie is sensational; it made me laugh so much. It has hilarious, truly funny moments. The beginning is surprising, much like what happens in Ace Ventura when he rescues the little dog. The title itself already speaks of fools, so you kind of imagine them, which is why the contrast is so surprising. Carrey is a master of facial expressions—he doesn't just pull all kinds of funny faces, but adapts them to the situation with all sorts of different gestures, always spot-on, accompanied by the vocabulary he uses. Right at the start, when he says "Austria," he begins playing the fool, and this starts showing through the clash of situations and facts. Just the yawn paints him as a silly guy, and to think we all yawn, but that moment right after what just happened already steals a laugh.
They use many clichés that they later subvert, and it works out fantastically for them. Some almost go unnoticed if you're not paying close attention—for instance, when he rolls up the limousine window and gets his nose caught.
In several passages, it makes allusions to other movies—or at least that's what I think, as several situations remind me of other films. When he mentions Crocodile Dundee, he is referencing Australia, showing the confusion he fell into after telling the girl she was from Austria.
The movie is a endless series of common situations exaggerated to the extreme, achieving exactly what this type of absurd comedy aims to deliver.
