As I walk along the Bois de Boulogne

As I walk along the Bois de Boulogne

With an independent air

You can hear the girls declare

"He must be a millionaire"

I'm the man who broke the bank at Monte Carlo.

History and Origin of the Song

The song sung by T. E. Lawrence (played by Peter O'Toole) in the famous canyon scene in Lawrence of Arabia (1962) does indeed exist outside the film and has a rich history:

•    Song Title: "The Man Who Broke the Bank at Monte Carlo"

•    Authorship: It was written and composed in 1891 by British songwriter Fred Gilbert. It became a famous Victorian music hall song popularised at the time by the singer Charles Coborn.

•    Theme: It humorously tells the story of a man who travels to the Monte Carlo casino, wins a huge fortune by breaking the tables, and then walks proudly along the boulevards of Paris (such as the Bois de Boulogne), enjoying the admiring looks of the women.

•    Is it real in Lawrence's life? Although it was not created for the film, including the song was a brilliant choice for the character: it reflects the eccentric spirit and extravagant British self-confidence of T.E. Lawrence as he enters the vastness of the desert.
