(Chronicle of a day in February 2007). In the square located at the foot of the National Library, known as the Readers' Square (Plaza del Lector), there is an exhibition on El Eternauta (The Eternaut), a comic book character from quite a long time ago. Lately, they have brought it back into fashion, possibly due to its author's life story; they have published books about it, and it is mentioned in the newspapers quite frequently. Specifically, it is the art exhibition titled H.G.O. + El Eternauta, commemorating the 30th anniversary of Héctor Germán Oesterheld's disappearance and the 50th anniversary of the publication of El Eternauta.
In reality, the exhibition is much larger and more comprehensive; in the Readers' Square, there are only the character profile sheets of the different characters.
I took a photograph, as an example, of one of the signs featuring the profile of the character Ernie Pike.
I haven't actually read the comic, nor anything by this author, nor anything related to him. I can't say much, other than comment on my stroll through the Readers' Square.
And the exhibition can be visited until August 15, 2007.
And they have installed a life-size figure, as close as possible to the comic's main character, leaning and looking out towards the street, but it is somewhat hidden because a couple of trees block the view. I took the photograph from the sidewalk as evening was falling and the sky was cloudy, but you can still make out the figure they set up.
What follows is the schedule of activities for the entirety of what that exhibition was.
The National Library invites you to the artistic and documentary exhibition H.G.O. + El Eternauta in commemoration of the 30th anniversary of Héctor Germán Oesterheld's disappearance and the 50th anniversary of the publication of El Eternauta. Likewise, for this occasion, the Library produced the comic El atajo: la batalla de la Biblioteca Nacional (The Shortcut: The Battle of the National Library), an unknown episode of El Eternauta.
